Largest Glacier Breakaway Ever Caught on Film

Directors James Balog and Jeff Orlowski witnessed 7.4 cubic km of ice breaking off of the Ilulissat Glacier in Greenland while working on James’ Extreme Ice Survey project. The sheer size of this is hard to comprehend from the video, but as you’ll see near the end of the clip, it’s described as if “the entire lower tip of Manhattan broke off.” The separation process is known as “calving”.
